History – Slots
Sittman and Pitt in Brooklyn, New York, USA, developed the first type of a slot machine in 1891, which was the precursor to the modern slot machine. This slot contained five drums which had a total of fifty photographs which were based on poker. This slot machine proved to be very attractive, and soon many bars in Brooklyn had one or more of these slots. Players would insert a coin, a nickel and pull a lever. This move resulted in the cylinders spun and stopped showing 5 symbols representing a poker hand. The better the hand, the better payout. At the beginning of these slots, there was no payout mechanism though. This meant that the player had to show the bar owner what hand he got at the slot machine, such as a set of queens. This could in turn lead to a pair of glasses or a bottle in the bar. The better the hand, the better bar order simply.
Because of the large number of potential winning hands in a standard poker game, it was practically impossible to come up with a way to produce a slot machine that could make an automatic payment for all possible winning combinations. For this reason, Charles Fey a few years later invented a slot machine that had three spinning reels with five symbols; Horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a Liberty Bell, which also gave the machine its name. By replacing ten cards with five symbols and three wheels instead of five, the complexity in finding payment for each win became much less difficult. This in itself resulted in Fey to be able to design an automated payment mechanism that was functioning. Three bells, the Liberty Bell’s, in a row resulted in the largest win. Liberty Bell was a huge success and is the one slot machine that has given rise to the extremely large market available today, not least at the internet casinos. Slots were banned in the US a few years later, but Fey still managed to earn good money on his machine when he began exporting them to other countries. Liberty Bell slot machine became so popular that it later was copied by many manufacturers of slots. For example by game developers of slots for internet casinos. Herbert Mills from Chicago, manufactured in 1907 a slot machine that came to be called the Operator Bell. The following year, 1908, a large amount of his slot machines were placed in most cigar stores, saloons, bowling alleys and brothels. The original Liberty Bell slot machine can still be seen on Nevada State Museum in Carson City, Nevada.
In 1963 the first fully electromechanical slot machine was developed by Bally and was called Money Honey. The popularity of this machine led to the increasing dominance of electronic slot games, and the side lever soon became no longer necessary and was replaced by a simple button for the player to press. However, the lever is still there on many slot machines, but then most as a ‘fun’ supplement to the button. Even on the internet slots, the graphics contain a side lever in order to contribute to the feeling of the original machines.
The first real video slot machine was developed in 1976 by N. Cerracchio, R. Greene, W. Beckman, J. Reukes and L. Black together with the Las Vegas based company Fortune Coin Co. This slot machine used a modified 19″ Sony Trinitron color receiver for display. The first units produced were tested at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. After a few modifications, it was an approved gaming machine of the Nevada State Gaming Commission and became after a while popular throughout the strip in Las Vegas. Fortune Coin Co. and their video slot machine technology was later acquired by IGT (International Gaming technology).
The first US gaming machine offering a “second screen” bonus round was Reel ‘Em In, developed by WMS Industries Inc. in 1996. This type of machine had actually turned up in Australia already in 1994 and was called “Three Bags Full”. In this type of machine, the display changes at a certain combination of symbols and takes you to the “other” game, a bonus game, where bigger wins can be made, which will accumulate to your credit.
A person playing a physical slot can insert cash or, in the Ticket In – Ticket-Out machines, a paper ticket with a barcode. The slot machine is then activated by means of a lever or a button.
The objective of slots is to win money from the gaming machines. The game usually involves matching symbols that spin and stop, and thus results in one or more symbols is in a winning line. The symbols are usually brightly colored and easily recognizable, such as images of fruits, numbers or letters. In newer forms, mainly on internet casinos, there are simple shapes such as bells, diamonds, or hearts. Newer video slots and internet slots uses animated cartoon characters, images and films by, for example, popular actors and singers.
Most games have a variety of winning combinations of symbols. On physical machines, these combinations are usually shown in a picture on the front of the machine. On the internet casino slots the winning combinations can be seen by pressing a button on the screen, often called paytable or pay table. If a player matches a combination according to the rules of the game, the slot machine will credit the player account or give out some other sort of value, such as extra games, free spins, or the opportunity to reach the gaming machine jackpot.
There are many different types of slot machines in places like Las Vegas. Some of the most popular are the video poker machines where players hope to obtain a set of symbols corresponding to a winning poker hand. Depending on the machine, the player can play a number of different hands at once. Another popular type of gambling machines internationally are the ones for bingo. Depending on the slot machine, a player may play one or more bingo cards simultaneously.
Internet slots with multi-line has become more popular since the 1990s. These machines have more than one payline, meaning that even symbols that are not located in the horizontal line can still result in a winning combination. Physical slot machines usually have three or five paylines, while slots on online casinos can have 9, 15, 25, or even more different paylines. Most internet slots have a specific theme for each game, some with graphics and music based on the theme. Most slot machines accept variable amounts of credit to play. One to fifteen credits per line are common. The higher the amount of your bet is, the higher the payout if you win.
Major casinos and internet casinos offer slot machines with denominations from five cents or pennies all the way up to at least $ 100 or equivalent in British denomination per credit.

Some slot games on internet offers a bonus that is activated when certain symbols appear in a certain order or combination. The bonus varies depending on the game. Some bonus rounds consist of free spins, which amount usually is based on the winning combination that triggers the bonus. These rounds often have a modified set of winning combinations compared to the main game. These rounds also often means an increase in credit value by a specific multiplier. The bonus rounds are often easy to recognize by a different color or different graphics than the main game. Another kind of bonus round is when the player is presented a number of points on a screen to choose from. When the player selects a specific object that contains a win it is awarded to the player’s balance.
The credit meter on the internet casino shows how much money or credit available to the player on the machine.
EGM is used as an abbreviation for “Electronic Gaming Machine.”
Payline is the line that crosses a symbol on each reel, along which a winning combination is evaluated. Physical game machines usually have up to nine paylines, while internet slots can have as many as a hundred or even more. Pay Lines can be of various forms such as horizontal, vertical, oblique, triangular, zigzag, and so on.
Rollup is the process of dramatizing a win by playing sounds while the credit meter counts up to the amount that the player has won.
The slots at the casino that are available for mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad, etc. are often marked with “mobile” at the internet casino. These internet slots are often stand-alone mobile casino games but may also be available as part of the internet casinos regular website.
Each slot machine has a table that shows how many points the player will be credited if the symbols stops in a specific order. Some symbols are “wild” and can represent many, or all, of the other symbols to complete a winning line. Older gaming machines set the pay table on the front of the machine. Internet slots in the casino has a button that says paytable or profit table where all the variations of the profits are shown and what each of them are worth.
Slots – Jackpot
On an internet casino it is most common with five reel slots, even though there are those with three reels. The problem with the slot machines that only consists of three wheels is that the number of combinations is only in square. The original slot machine with three reels and physical ten symbols on each reel had only a thousand possible combinations. This limited manufacturer’s ability to offer large jackpots, because even the most rare incident occurred at 0.1% of the time, which actually is quite often.
To further maximize a jackpot, an increased number of symbols was needed. Nowadays it’s usually about 22 of them, which, on the five reels slot, allowing about 10,000 combinations.
With the microprocessors that are used today by the internet casinos, manufacturers can assign a different probability of when each symbol on each reel is shown. To reduce the likelihood of the specific combination that will trigger a jackpot, it’s now possible to choose exactly how often this combination will be shown.
Another way for internet slots to maximize the jackpot is to have a larger number of symbols on each reel. There are those who have up to fifty, and the odds can therefore be as high as 300 million to one to trigger the jackpot.
On the internet slots, casino players can often choose to play on several lines. So instead of just simply take the line in the middle he can choose a line going from top left to bottom right, or any of the other patterns specified by the manufacturer. How many lines to bet on is different. The result is obvious that the more lines the player chooses to bet at, the greater the chance to win in each spin. The downside is that each spin costs more.
Internet slots are typically programmed to pay out winnings between 82% to 98% of the money wagered by players. This is known as the minimum theoretical payout percentage. The minimum theoretical payout percentage varies between countries and is typically established by law or regulation. For example, the minimum payout in Nevada is 75%, in New Jersey it is 83% and 80% in Mississippi. What does this RTP, return to player or pay out percentage mean? Suppose that a certain slot machine costs a penny per spin and has a return to player of 95%. Then it can be calculated that over a sufficiently long period, such as 1,000,000 spins, the machine will reimburse an average of SEK 950,000 to its players. In this simplified example, then the slot machine to pay out 95%. The operator keeps the remaining 50 000.
